Three-Way Chute Automation System for Efficient Coal Handling
The Three-Way Chute Automation System is a fully integrated coal handling solution designed to automate coal diversion between multiple conveyor belts. This system ensures safe, reliable, and efficient coal routing using motorized gates, PLC automation, SCADA monitoring, and advanced electrical installations.
Designed for industrial coal handling facilities, the Three-Way Chute Automation System minimizes manual intervention while improving operational safety and productivity.
Project Overview
The objective of the Three-Way Chute Automation System was to automate the coal diversion process between different belts, ensuring smooth transfer and proper routing based on operational requirements.
The project included mechanical installation, electrical works, PLC programming, SCADA modification, safety interlocks, and full commissioning to ensure complete system functionality.
Scope of Work – Three-Way Chute Automation System
1. Installation of Putter Motors
As part of the Three-Way Chute Automation System, two putter motors (3KW, 380V) were installed to operate coal diverting gates.
Motor Configuration
One putter motor installed at the second floor to divert coal to Belt 2022 (SR-2 via TT-2).
Second putter motor installed on the first floor to divert coal to:
Belt 2042 (Old Stockyard)
Belt 2023B (SR-01)
This configuration allows flexible and controlled coal routing within the coal handling plant.
2. Power and Control Cabling
The Three-Way Chute Automation System required complete power and control infrastructure.
Electrical Cabling Works
Laying power and control cables from LV ECR near Coal Sampler-01 to both putter motors.
Installation of cable trays and ducts at TT-1 for proper cable management.
Provision for Fiber Optic cable from MMD-1 to MMD-2 (if required).
This ensured organized routing and reliable communication between control panels and field devices.
3. Field Electrical Installations
To ensure durability and operational safety, the following installations were completed:
Junction Boxes & Distribution Boards
Installation of field Junction Boxes (JBs).
Installation of Electrical Distribution Boards (DBs).
Proper termination, protection, and earthing of all circuits.
The Three-Way Chute Automation System was designed with industrial-grade components suitable for harsh coal handling environments.
4. Safety & Monitoring Devices
Safety is a critical component of any Three-Way Chute Automation System.
Installed Safety Equipment
Limit switches for putter motor position feedback.
Tilt switches to detect chute blockage.
Emergency shutdown push button installed in the field to handle abnormal situations.
These devices ensure protection against system failure and operational hazards.
5. PLC Programming & Automation
Automation is the core of the Three-Way Chute Automation System.
PLC & Interlocking Logic
Programming of PLCs for MMD-1 and MMD-2.
Development of logic for automated chute and belt interlocking.
Integration with other PLCs as required.
Ensured smooth and synchronized belt operation.
The system ensures efficient coal handling and prevents improper belt operation.
6. SCADA (WinCC) Modification
To enhance monitoring capabilities:
Existing SCADA (WinCC) system modified as per project design.
Real-time status monitoring added.
Alarm and fault indication incorporated.
Visual representation of chute positions and belt status.
The Three-Way Chute Automation System provides centralized control and improved operational visibility.
7. Commissioning & System Validation
The project included complete commissioning and system verification.
Functional testing of putter motors.
Verification of interlocks and safety protections.
Testing of limit switches and tilt switches.
Final operational approval.
The Three-Way Chute Automation System was fully tested to ensure reliability and system integrity.
