The SEW-EURODRIVE BE5A is a spring-applied, electrically released disc brake from the BE series used on SEW DR motors, shown here with a 20 Nm braking torque and a manual release lever.
When the DC coil is energised it pulls the pressure plate against the brake springs so the brake disc can turn. When power is removed, the springs clamp the disc between the pressure plate and the end shield, so the brake holds the motor automatically on a power failure. BE brakes have damping plates for low noise, a low-energy holding coil and fast release and reaction for accurate positioning. Braking torque can be changed by changing the number and type of springs, and wear is taken up by adjusting the air gap without dismantling the brake. The coil must be powered only through an SEW brake rectifier.
